Professor Szymczak, the Law Library Director, organizes fun dive trips at UH that double for an opportunity to help keep our harbors and reefs clean of debris. Diving for Detritus - cleverly named by Dean Soifer - is open to all certified divers at UH. It works closely with Ocean Defenders Alliance out of California who hopes to establish a chapter here in Hawaii. In addition to law students, we have grads from SOEST involved in our efforts. It is a great way to socialize across schools - though it is NOT an official UH organization.
The first dive of the 2016-2017 academic year takes place tomorrow at 12:30 on the west side. Our boat leaves from the Waianae Boat Harbor, courtesy of Hawaii Nautical! Big mahalos to Hawaii Nautical for supporting ocean clean up efforts. Tomorrow, divers will learn the rudiments of ocean clean up and practice how to haul unsafe materials from the ocean onto the boat. Kurt Lieber, founder of ODA, will be leading the instruction. There is a $10 tank fee. Hawaii Nautical can arrange for equipment rentals if you need to rent equipment. Contact Professor Szymczak if you want to join tomorrow or sign up for future dives. The group tries to go out once a month. So GET OUT OF THE LAW LIBRARY and go diving with Professor Szymczak!
