The Pacific Island collection is coming along nicely. It is now located where the computer/printing area used to be. Printing will be scattered through the library when school starts again, and we will also have a few open student workstations for student use.

The new design is starting to take shape. The floor tile seems to be holding and the floorers are going to start laying in more tile and carpet this week. A close up of the grey tile is pictured below. Primer and color have been applied to some of the columns, and one accent wall in the lobby has received a test coat of paint. And, thankfully, the AC is back on! Still lots of work to be done!
We are prepping the walls for the new paint scheme. This means removing bookcases from the walls in the lobby area. Look what we found! Yes boys and girls, even the walls were orange at some point in time! This time we are going to do it better and get rid of those orange walls for good. The art conservators are here and are carefully removing the Moore paintings from the walls so the painters don't paint around the picture frames! Incidentally, in 1925 Frank Moore became the first Director of the Honolulu Art Museum. He oversaw its construction before resigning in 1927. The mauka side is ALMOST all packed up. Our book shelves are piling up in the back of the library (which is usually the quiet study area but is anything but quiet these days). The end panels have been removed. They will be shipped off site to be painted alternating colors of blue and green to match the Library's new color palette. We are waiting for more boxes to arrive from the mainland to finish packing things up. Demolition is set to start later this week! Some die hard library users don't seem mind the construction. This person sat through a lot of noise and movement all day. We left the table alone because he seemed too intent to bother. We'll have to move it another day! Nearly half of the books and their shelving have been packed up this week. Several thousand boxes are scheduled to arrive on Monday to continue the project. TGIF! |
