You might recognize this space as the computer lab area in the Library. There used to be a little wall where the printers were lined up across from the brown post in the picture. This will be the new home for our Pacific Island collection. Most of those little walls in the Library are being demolished this week, making it a pretty dusty place right now!

The contractors started pulling back pieces of the carpeting today. We were hoping we would find an intact concrete slab. Alas, cracks were found which means extra days of construction work. We are still shooting to finish by August 16th, but we still do not know the extent of repairs at this point.
The mauka side is ALMOST all packed up. Our book shelves are piling up in the back of the library (which is usually the quiet study area but is anything but quiet these days). The end panels have been removed. They will be shipped off site to be painted alternating colors of blue and green to match the Library's new color palette. We are waiting for more boxes to arrive from the mainland to finish packing things up. Demolition is set to start later this week! Some die hard library users don't seem mind the construction. This person sat through a lot of noise and movement all day. We left the table alone because he seemed too intent to bother. We'll have to move it another day! Nearly half of the books and their shelving have been packed up this week. Several thousand boxes are scheduled to arrive on Monday to continue the project. TGIF! StarCom, our contractors, are in full swing. We closed the mauka side of the Law Library. The lobby area, CJ's corner and the makai side of the Law Library are open for business. Most of our circulating collection is on the makai side so you still have some time to check out books for the summer. We expect to reopen the mauka side the week of July 8th. There is a temporary barricade running down the center of the Law Library to contain dust and remind you to stay away from the active work areas! What to know what is going on behind curtain number 1? We are packing books and taking down the shelves. We hope to be done with the mauka side by the end of this week. |
