StarCom, our contractors, are in full swing. We closed the mauka side of the Law Library. The lobby area, CJ's corner and the makai side of the Law Library are open for business. Most of our circulating collection is on the makai side so you still have some time to check out books for the summer. We expect to reopen the mauka side the week of July 8th. There is a temporary barricade running down the center of the Law Library to contain dust and remind you to stay away from the active work areas! What to know what is going on behind curtain number 1? We are packing books and taking down the shelves. We hope to be done with the mauka side by the end of this week.

Today is the first "true" day of LIP (the "Library Improvement Project"), graduation was yesterday (Ho'omaika'i 'Ana Ho’opuka Class of 2016), summer school hasn't started and, truth be told, it is a bit noisy in the Law Library. BUT, low and behold, our mini computer lab is 100% occupied with law students and we have public patrons doing tax research! Not even the dust, noise and general disruption of services stops our ohana from frequenting the School of Law Library. The old computer area has been dismantled. A small, temporary dual computer and printing station has been assembled in CJ's corner for student use while we are under construction. The future layout for the library calls for decentralized student workstations. What about printing? IT will be implementing remote printing just in time for the fall semester in 2016. Printers, like computers, will be distributed through the building. You might notice that our indoor foliage is starting to disappear. As we get closer to the true start of renovation (Monday, May 16), we are moving our green friends to what we hope is a safe environment - the Library Director's house. By Friday, May 13th, all the plants will be moved. Let's hope the Director can keep them growing over the next 3 months so that they return home all in one piece... and slightly taller. We are trying to get a jump start on packing our books for the Library Improvement Project (aka LIP). The contractors sent us over 250 boxes to start practicing how we are going to box things up. Unfortunately, the size of the box was smaller than agreed upon. But that is OK. Future boxes will be larger and the process will be the same regardless of the size. At least we got started and Lynette is in control at command central. 250 down, 6,750 to go... more or less. |
